Published: Aug 14, 2019 2:00:00 PM South Africa Standard Time

Momentum Metropolitan Holdings, (formerly MMI Holdings), has appointed two new members to the Momentum Metropolitan Executive Committee (Group Exco). Dumo Mbethe and Hannes Viljoen, both internal appointments, will assume their roles effective 16 September and 1 September 2019, respectively. Mbethe will assume the role of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Momentum Corporate and Viljoen will be the CEO of Momentum Metropolitan Health.

Mbethe joined the Group in January 2017 and has 16 years’ experience in the financial services industry, nine of which were at executive level. As the CEO of the Momentum Metropolitan Africa business since October 2017, with responsibility for 11 countries outside South Africa, he has led the Africa portfolio with distinction, successfully progressing its Reset and Grow strategic objectives. He has developed a reputation for his ability to manage complexity, his sound business acumen and natural skill to successfully build relationships with multiple stakeholders. Mbethe is an accountant CA (SA) by profession.

“Momentum Corporate is a business that has an important role to play in South Africa through the delivery of employee benefit solutions that enable people to achieve their financial goals and lifetime aspirations. I look forward to the new opportunities and challenges this role will bring and to building deep connections with our team and our clients, who are the catalysts for achieving our goals,” he says.

Since joining the group in 2003, Viljoen has demonstrated deep knowledge of health economics, taking executive responsibility for the business’s health interests in South Africa in 2016. During his tenure the health business has been stabilised and transformed into a formidable and competitive business unit. Viljoen pioneered various health initiatives, such as the first independent hospital network in SA, the first insight capability for the hospital industry, and the first low-cost medical aid.

“As a health business, we are excited to build on the opportunities made possible by this repositioning of health in Momentum Metropolitan. I look forward to contributing to a new model of sustainable growth that serves the needs of key stakeholders,” he says.

Momentum Metropolitan Holdings CEO Hillie Meyer is confident that Mbethe and Viljoen will contribute positively to the capacity of the Group Exco: “These appointments will strengthen our operations and help us to continue on our strategic path of expansion and growth. The Momentum Metropolitan Group is blessed with exceptional people and I wish Dumo and Hannes all the best in their new positions.”
